Tres Tierras Malbec
KARIM MUSSI WINES
Bodega Alandes
Tres Tierras Malbec
Region
From the high-altitude vineyards of the Calchaquí Valley in Salta to the cooler,
elevated sites of the Uco Valley and the southerly reaches of Patagonia, these
regions together showcase the diversity of Argentina’s terroir. Wide diurnal
temperature variation is a common thread, helping to produce small crops of
concentrated, healthy fruit. While Salta delivers power and intensity, the Uco
Valley brings freshness and floral character, and Patagonia offers a cooler
climate expression with elegance and balance from its long growing season
and alluvial soils.
Producer
A firm favourite with our customers, and internationally recognised as one of
the most talented winemakers in Argentina today, Karim Mussi continues to
go from strength to strength, with leading wine critics falling over themselves
to heap praise on these expressive and distinctive wines. Altocedro is a terroir
driven winery in La Consulta, a special spot in the Uco Valley. Alongside Altocedro,
the Alandes project represents absolute freedom, a ‘laissez-faire’ winemaking
philosophy that is in an extensive territory without borders. Abras, in Cafayete,
reflects Karim’s ongoing search for unique terroir expressions. It sources fruit
from vines that are over 50 years old, planted on alluvial soils in the bottom of
the valley for purer mineral and fruit expressions.
Viticulture
From the far north in Salta, through Mendoza’s Uco Valley, and all the way down
to Patagonia in the south, this wine connects nearly 2,000 kilometers across 12
degrees of latitude. Each component was a challenge in itself—harvesting grapes
across distant valleys in an effort to capture the widest possible expression of these
regions. After a year of aging in barrels and concrete tanks, and once the wines
were ready for bottling, they were brought together in Mendoza for the “Tres
Tierras” blend. The best result was achieved by balancing the three expressions
equally, using one-third of each component to ensure a strong and authentic
representation of their individual identities.
Vinification
Fermentation in small concrete tanks, using indigenous yeast. Two weeks skin
maceration with a submerged cap. 50% agedfor 12 months in French oak barrels
and 50% in concrete tanks for 10 months.
Tasting Note
A wine with solid Malbec varietal typicity, enhanced by the complexity and
synergy that blending provides. It delivers a multidimensional, rich, and layered
profile that reflects the “high desert” concept, behaving like a true condor—
connecting the vast Andes mountain range.
